What the hockey lighting standards mean for your club
Pitch lighting is measured in lux, which is simply how much light lands on the surface. A hockey pitch is a large playing area, and the level you play at sets how much light it needs.
As a rough guide, community and recreational play is usually lit to around 200 to 300 lux, club competition to around 300 to 500 lux, and national-level hockey higher again, up to around 750 lux, in line with the European standard EN 12193 and the categories set by the FIH and Hockey Ireland. In hockey, though, uniformity is the number that really matters.
Because the ball is small, hard, and moves fast and low across the turf, the light has to be exceptionally even, with no dark spots, which is a higher bar than many other sports set.
The pitch is lit from tall columns positioned around the sides, and the design has to balance that even coverage with tight glare control for the lifted game. We carry out a full lighting design for your pitch, confirm the exact lux level and uniformity you will achieve for your category of play, and if your club is pushing on, we design with the next standard in mind so you are not paying to upgrade again in a few years.

Cutting your electricity bills with LED
Electricity is one of the biggest running costs any club carries, and floodlights are a large part of that. Older metal halide systems burn through power, take an age to warm up, and fade as the lamps age, so you end up paying more for less light.
A modern LED system changes the numbers. You get up to 50% lower lighting energy use, instant full brightness at the flick of a switch, and controls that let you light only half the pitch for training or tie the lights into your booking system so they come on when players are due. On a pitch that is booked morning to night, that control turns straight into savings. Over a 20-year lifespan, those add up to a serious amount your club can put straight back into players, coaching, and the surface itself.
Grant support for your lighting project
Most clubs fund floodlighting through the Sports Capital and Equipment Programme (SCEP), now running as the Community Sport Facilities Fund (CSFF). It is the main source of Government funding for sports facilities in Ireland, and lighting upgrades are exactly the kind of project it supports. Larger facility projects may also be eligible for the Large Scale Sport Infrastructure Fund (LSSIF), which is aimed at bigger builds.
Grants can cover a significant share of the cost, with a strong recent emphasis on energy efficiency that plays right into an LED upgrade.
