What the rugby lighting standards mean for your club
Pitch lighting is measured in lux, which is simply how much light lands on the grass. A rugby pitch is a large playing area, and the higher the level you play at, the more light it needs.
As a rough guide, training usually calls for somewhere around 100 to 200 lux, club competition for roughly 200 to 350 lux, and senior competition for around 500 lux, in line with the European standard EN 12193 and the guidance of the IRFU and World Rugby. The headline number is only part of it, though. Uniformity is what matters most in rugby, because an even wash of light with no dark spots is what lets a full-back track a high ball all the way down and a defence hold its shape in the tackle.
The layout matters too. A rugby pitch is usually lit from four, six, or eight columns positioned around the sides, never a single row on one side, which is both a safety and a uniformity issue. We carry out a full lighting design for your ground, confirm the exact lux level and uniformity your system will deliver for the level you play, and if your club is pushing on, we design with the next standard in mind so you are not paying to upgrade again in a few years.
